Itching, burning, scratching.

It sounds like you may have athlete’s foot, a fungal infection that loves sweaty environmentsImagine the mold and mildew that grows in your shower when you don’t dry it. You create a similar ecosystem inside your socks when your feet sweat. Athlete’s foot is annoying and painful. However, doing something as simple as choosing the right type of sock may be all you need to get rid of it AND prevent it from getting in-between your toes and on your nerves ever again!

So why do your feet get fungus? Your feet sweat more than any other part of your body, and when you wear traditional socks or (worse!) shoes without socks, that sweat gets trapped and allows the infection to invade your feet. Whether it's sweat from a humid summer, or an autumn filled with boots and warm socks, athlete's foot does not discriminate. It thrives in any moist environment.

Now that we understand it’s all about the moisture, it’s time to find moisture-wicking socks! You need socks that will keep your feet dry, while eliminating the bacteria on your feet. Lucky for you, BrightLife Direct has an entire line of moisture-wicking compression socks. These socks are dedicated to getting rid of and preventing athlete’s foot in the future.

Compression socks are perfect for absorbing moisture and getting rid of athlete’s foot. By fitting close against the skin they can immediately wick away moisture from your feet. Additionally, many of our athletic compression socks are made with fabric that is embedded with metal ions. Socks with copper and silver ions can destroy 99.9% of the bacteria trespassing on your feet, which is one reason why athletes choose to wear them. Compression socks also increase circulation (which includes oxygenated blood), decreasing recovery time post workout. Wearing compression socks means athletes, and anyone who wears compression socks, can focus on their performance, not their funky feet.

It's important to prevent athlete's foot because it's so contagious. It can be spread by particles left on towels, clothes, or the floor. These tips will help the treatment process, reduce spread, and prevent it from returning:

Scrub, scrub, scrub

Keep your feet (especially in-between your toes) clean and dry. When you return home for the day give your feet a good cleaning. Once they are scrubbed be sure to dry them. Let your toes enjoy a bit of freedom by walking around barefoot for as long as possible.

 Protect your Feet in Public

Wear flip-flops in public areas like a locker-room, shower, or pool to prevent spreading or catching Athlete’s foot.

Treat your Toes

Treating your toes is the most important part of preventing athlete’s foot. Buy anti-fungal sprays and powders to pamper your feet daily. Next, buy socks that wick away moisture and prevent bacteria from growing.

Here’s a list of our best socks for treating and preventing athlete’s foot:

 ALLEGRO

Our most popular athletic socks, Allegro Athletic Copper Support Socks have copper woven into the sole.  Copper is naturally antifungal, so it helps kill the cause of athlete’s foot. Copper is also instrumental in destroying odor causing bacteria. These socks are knit using CoolMax Polyester, so they do a great job of keeping moisture away from the skin.

JUZO

Juzo offers silver sole socks as well as full silver stockings that are often prescribed for patients with lymphedema or cellulitis, where keeping their skin free from bacteria is very important. Juzo Silver Sole stockings are available in a mild compression in crew, mini-crew and knee-high styles. Juzo styles also have a longer foot, which is invaluable for individuals with large feet. Their brand stockings are all machine washable and dryer safe, with prices starting at $13.59

SOCKWELL

If you’re looking for knee high sock to pair with  a dress and booties this fall check out Sockwell. They’re a perfect mood to pair  with fall styles while offering arch support and a  cushioned sole. All Sockwell socks are made with  Superfine Merino Wool providing natural  thermoregulation and moisture management, making  them great for all day, every day wear. This fabric is  naturally durable, antibacterial, and blister-proof.

 MEDIVEN

Mediven’s line of Active socks feature a patented Clima Fresh technology that prevents athlete’s foot and bacteria from growing on the leg and footThis same technology will keep your feet feeling cool year-round.

These are just a few of the brands we carry that help keep your feet dry. Check out BrightLife Direct’s wide array of compression socks for athletes to find the best socks for your lifestyle and get your feet on a moisture free path. Before you purchase a pair make sure you take your measurements to determine the correct compression fit for you, because if they’re too tight, you won’t be able to get them on, and if they’re too loose, they won’t absorb all the moisture on your foot or provide compression correctly. If you need help choosing the right size or brand, give us a call at (+31)262843975 or check out our virtual size machine.

Nobody should suffer from athlete’s foot, so put a stop to the spread of that pesky infection and treat yourself to a pair of compression socks today!

Accessories make everything better. They can take an outfit from drab to fab and, in the case of compression socks and sleeves, accessories make your life EASIER. In other blog posts we have talked about aids to help you get your socks on and off as well as how to wash your compression garments. What we haven’t covered is the variety of accessories lebontadipio offers.

Stocking donners and doffers are excellent accessories, but let’s take a look at the items outside of that category that our customers love.

First is the It Stays Body Adhesive, a gentle roll-on body adhesive that takes the place of a garter belt or silicone band to keep your stockings and sleeves in place all day. You simply roll it on to skin and press the article in place. It Stays washes off with water and is pliable so it moves with your skin. Fun fact: It Stays is the number one choice for beauty pageant contestants to keep swimsuit bottoms in place during judging. The uses go beyond pageants and compression garments, it can be used for shoulder straps, bra straps, wigs, toupees, theatrical make-up devices and more!

Customer reviews are plentiful and positive. One reviewer wrote:

“It's wonderful. I wear super support hose and with your product they last much longer and stay up much better. Thank you.”

Next is the Compression Assist Donning Aide, since this isn’t a traditional donning tool and it does so much more, I’m mentioning it here. This hypoallergenic spray does make getting your compression stockings on a breeze, but it also allows you to easily adjust and remove your stockings, it reduces wrinkling/creasing and increases wearing comfort.

Another fan favorite is ALPS Fitting Lotion. This lotion helps your stockings glide on but has an added bonus, it protects sensitive skin, makes dry skin feel silky smooth and it helps prevent garments from snagging. It’s made from 100% silicone and contains no perfumes or dyes. Additionally, it isn’t just for compression, it is used with prosthetic's as well.

Customers have said:

“For anyone wearing compression stockings-this is a God sent product. It makes putting the garments on much easier”

“Use with leg prosthesis. By using lotion prior to putting on leg prosthesis-insures comfort. Highly recommend”

Wearing compression garments on a regular basis can really dry out your skin, making legs and arms flaky and itchy. Using regular lotions can make it difficult to put your compression garments on and can reduce the lifespan of the fabric. lebontadipio offers a selection of compression-friendly lotions and creams that keep your skin soft and smooth and won’t harm your compression stockings or sleeves. Lymphoderm Body Lotion is an all natural, pH balancing lotion that softens skin, soothes irritation and is ideal for those with lymphedema.

The tension can be easily adjusted, it works with any size bandage, and the handle can be switched to accommodate right or left handed users. The Lohmann & Rauscher Bandage Roller is very easy to use and is great for those who regularly wash and re-use bandages. It comes with a bracket for mounting on any flat surface, when not in use it can be taken out of the bracket holder and stored for next time.

If you prefer to wash your compression hosiery and other delicates in the washing machine, the Juzo Laundry Bag is perfect for you. Using a laundry bag is an inexpensive way to prevent snags, tangling and stretching. The flow-thru mesh bag lets water circulate freely for through cleaning. A zipper pull pocket prevents the zipper pull from catching on other items in the wash. This product has abundant reviews from happy customers.

Itching is universal. Everyone, at some point, has to scratch an itch.

There are so many things that make us itch, besides wearing compression stockings, that determining and eliminating the cause is almost impossible. Xerosis or dry skin makes us itch. Allergies, fungal infections, and insect bites can make us itch. Skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema can cause severe itching. Even scratching can make us itch more. Repetitive scratching produces a thick, often slightly darker area of skin, that itches even more. A topical cream with capsaicin or corticosteroid may be required to break the itch-scratch-itch cycle.

Completely eliminating the itch from compression stockings may not be possible, but you may be able to reduce the severity by moisturizing. We sell several creams and gels that do a great job of moisturizing your skin, and there are many dermatologist recommended pharmacy brand lotions that do a good job too. I have very dry and sensitive skin, plus eczema and psoriasis, and have found Cerave lotion does the best job of keeping my skin type moisturized. I slather it on from head to toe in the morning after I shower, and at night before bed. In the morning, I try to moisture at least 15-20 minutes before donning my stockings so the lotion has time to be absorbed. Consistency is important. If I miss a day or two, my skin starts to itch again, with or without compression stockings.

This regimen won’t work for everyone, but if your legs itch when you wear compression socks, give it a try for a few days to see if it helps you.
